How To Be A Productive Solopreneur And A Full-Time Parent
As a solopreneur you know how hard the job actually is. You know this journey is going to put many obstacles in your way.
As a parent you also want to be there when your children need you.
Which Full-Time Job?
Parenting itself is a full-time job. Your home business is also a full-time job – or it should be if you intend to make any money. Trying to do both jobs at once only leaves you exhausted at the end of the day. Not only are you tired, you have trouble switching off from one role to the other.
Do you want to parent full-time, or do you want to work full-time? If you work all the time and can’t switch off at the end of the day, you are neglecting your family time. Maybe you are just worried about making enough money to support your family. These types of thoughts are best left for during your work day.
Or maybe you really do want to parent full-time and you let that interfere with your job. If you constantly take time off work to go on a vacation with your family, you are then neglecting your work.
Are you distracted by your kids playing nearby? Are you finding it hard to focus on work when you would rather play with the kids?
How do you separate the two parts of your life successfully?
Since every situation is different, you need to be the one to figure out your best plan of action.
If you try to parent and work at the same time, then you will not succeed very well in either one. You just spread yourself too thin and some things just don’t get done.
This is where you need to stop and think about when it is work time and when it is family time. You should set a time limit for work and only quit when that time comes.
You might be thinking that setting a work schedule defeats the purpose of working from home. You need to work, but you also need to attend to your family. There are ways you can enjoy the benefits of both, while keeping family life and work life separate.
Take Breaks Throughout The Day
Seems obvious but first of all, allow yourself breaks throughout the day. Having lunch with your family is a great way to connect and find out what everyone has been doing all morning.
As long as you have clearly defined times for taking breaks, then do so and return to work afterwards.
Focus on Accomplishments
Instead of thinking about working a set amount of hours each day, try focusing on completing a certain amount of work. If you have projects that need completing, you can get them done faster, which will leave you more free time to spend with your family.
Set productivity goals for the day and concentrate on accomplishing these goals. Allow yourself to be flexible so you can deal with family demands without derailing your work flow.
