How To Calm Your Mind From Anxiety

Worrying about the ‘what ifs’ in life can lead to a mind filled with tension, anxiety and stress. A racing mind cannot find relaxation and peace, and a mind at peace is most productive.

Learning to calm your mind and rid your thoughts of all the negativity will help you find more satisfaction in your daily life.

There are many to calm an overactive brain; try some of these suggestions to get you started on a clearer path:

1. Eat Healthier

We all know that processed foods and foods high in sugar are not the best foods for our body. Besides causing a ton of physical symptoms, these foods can also increase your tension and stress levels. Switching to a diet loaded with fruits, vegetables and non-processed meats will do wonders for your body. Ditching the sweet drinks in favor of water will also help reduce your stress and calm your jitters.

2. Clean the Clutter

Make it a habit to clean the kitchen after meals. This clutter can be a constant cause of anxiety if not cleaned right away. The same goes for clutter around your house. Is there a pile of clean laundry that needs to folded and put away? Do it now. Walk around your house and de-clutter each room as you go. Place items where they belong. Once things are nice and tidy, your mind will feel more at ease and ready to tackle the rest of the day.

3. Radio vs Television

Leaving the television on for company can be detrimental to your health. Even if you are not consciously watching, your mind is hearing it and absorbing all the good and bad news going on around the world.

Face it, the television is often filled with the negative things that people do to each other on a daily basis. You don’t need to hear about their problems. Turn off the TV and opt for listening to soothing music that you enjoy.

4. Exercise

Exercise is as important as the food you put into your body. You don’t need to go to the gym to exercise, you can choose to walk, bike, do yoga or a host of other low impact activities. You don’t need strenuous activity to get your heart pumping and your blood flowing: all you need to do is get out there and move. The simple act of getting the body moving is a quick way to release any tension and stress you are feeling.

5. Reflect on the Causes of Anxiety

We often experience anxiety when we don’t understand what is happening around us. We worry about things out of our control, without taking the time to wonder why were are so worked up. Now is the time to ask yourself some meaningful questions, like:

Have I contributed to this problem?
What can I do to help the situation?
Is this a good or bad issue?
Is it really all that important to my life?
Do I need to get involved?
Will it cost me anything?

Your answers will lead you to your course of action or inaction. Remember, action is a great way to slow down an overactive mind.

6. Meditation

Meditation is a another great way to calm an overactive mind. Where action is getting outside yourself, meditation is finding that deep inner peace that resides in all of us. You can choose to sit quietly and meditate at home, or you can take a walk to clear your mind. However you choose to meditate, know that meditation is as old as mankind. Join the ranks and see how it can calm your mind and body.

7. Be One With Nature

Nature is the perfect environment to find inner peace. Take a walk along the beach, or deep in the woods by a clear lake. Head to your favorite park and take in the sights and sounds of nature. After spending time outdoors, you cannot help but feel relaxed and full of well-being.

8. Don’t Forget to Play

Stress builds up when humans forget how to enjoy life. Whether you choose to go to the movies with friends, or head to the nearest amusement park, having fun and laughing with family and friends is a great stress breaker.

How can you feel stressed when enjoying time with your favorite people? Make a habit of having fun, and you will notice your stress and anxiety levels decreasing by the day.

9. Don’t Multi-task

If your mind is filled with stress and anxiety, it may be because you try to do too much at a time. Multi-tasking works for some people, but most people feel too overwhelmed when trying to do to much at once.

Instead of multi-tasking, spend time finishing one task before moving on to the next. You will feel calmer when you see that jobs are getting done in record time.

Without the distraction of working on multiple things at once you will soon notice that your mind is clear and you can once again stay calm and focused.

10. Journal

Writing is a great way to let go of your daily stress and anxiety. A cluttered mind is as bad as a cluttered house.

Spend time each night writing down what is bothering you and soon you will begin to see patterns that will help you better understand yourself.

Once you reach this point, you will find your mind is less cluttered and the stress will just melt away.
