How to Design the Perfect Home Office for Productive Focus

Did you know that your environment has a lot to do with your mental health? If your room, office and desk are messy and cluttered, your mind will also be cluttered. With your mind so cluttered it is hard to clean the mess. While it will take time to rid your mind of the cluttered thinking, clearing your space is something you can do right now.

Once your spaces are clean and clutter free, you will notice immediate positive effects on your stress levels. Organizing your room and your work area is a really quick way to improve your mood and your overall work-day efficiency.

Find Things Quickly

A clean work space allows you to find things quickly and easily. It is easy to find paper, pens, pencils and other office supplies you need if they are all put away neatly. A cluttered space means you spend so much time just looking for what you need. An unorganized desk also means you will have less time to finish jobs you need to get done. Also, you have to worry about losing important papers in the mess you have created. Searching for what you need every day is a very stressful task. A tidy work space will reduce that stress.

Be More Relaxed

You will also notice you are more relaxed in a clean and tidy space. Being relaxed will help you manage your time better and will keep you focused on the job at hand. Finding what you need will make it easy for you to multi-task and get your work done for the day.

How does one create such a tidy work space? Here is a way to get started:

The Three Tray System

The three tray system has been around probably as long as man. It mirrors how our brains operate and is the perfect way to get organized. The word ‘tray’ doesn’t mean a literal tray, it can be anything you use to store things. These three trays are labeled:

Working Storage

This tray is for jobs you are currently working on. All papers and supplies should be placed here. This tray needs to be on, or close to, your desk, for easy accessibility.

Short Term Storage

This tray should hold all items that you think you may need in the next week or month.

Long Term Storage

These papers are usually placed in a file cabinet for safe keeping. These are things you need to keep, but will probably not need much in the future.

Using the tray system, clear off your desk at the end of your work day. File things appropriately and you can head off to your family knowing your work life is tidy.

Finding Inspiration

Organization and cleanliness are just part of your productive office space. Think about adding some items to the room that spark your creativity and inspire you to reach higher. This could include art work or posters, or items you have collected. Don’t overdo it, but do add things that make you think.

Finally

After all this is done, you are well on your way to being a successful solopreneur.
